On Thursday (Aug 24), Siti Nuryanti, a 41-year-old Indonesian, was sentenced to 28 months' jail for one charge of theft of S$48,400. After memorising the personal identification number (PIN) of an older man for whom she was hired to look after, a domestic worker proceeded to withdraw S$162,000 from his bank account. She had stolen his ATM card after seeing him key in the PIN while withdrawing money, and made 50 withdrawals from January to April this year. She cited reasons like needing to pay for her child back home and her mother's medical bills due to recent health problems. She also had outstanding debts to illegal money lenders she wanted to pay off.
The judge presiding over her case stated that her situation had not called for criminal acts of stealing large sums of money. It was not something unique that she was facing that warranted her actions, but was obviously a choice she made to improve her financial situation, while taking advantage of the elderly man.
It goes without saying that the PIN for the ATM, bank or credit card should not openly revealed or exposed willy-nilly. The ease of paying with a wave of one's card already makes theft easier once someone has ahold of your debit or credit card, so its physical security is the first factor - ensuring your card is not accessible, or easily found in your wallet. The PIN is the next level of security to deter theft. Hence it is prudent never to write it down where others can see it, or to allow someone else to sneak a peek and memorise it - use your wallet or hand to cover the keypad for safety.
The security at Vault@268 is created such that situations like that cannot occur. The 4-layer security system is so unique that only the client has access to his vault. The first layer is tied to one's biometric details, ie. facial recognition as the surest way of ensuring the person accessing a safe deposit box is the one and only client. A keycard with your own PIN is needed to open two doorways and also retrieve your box, before the box's key set itself is employed to open the lid on the box.
Don't compromise your assets. Once gone with the wind, there is no recovering stolen assets, so don't give thieves the opportunity. We value your privacy and help to protect what is important to you.
