Gold Jewellery and 3 Ways to Evaluate Them

April 22, 2024 Vault@268

Gold as an investment has been a safe haven for the ages. It weathers through bad economy, uncertain political upheaval, disasters and whatever else the world may throw our way next. It has also been a source of eye candy and delight for those who appreciate this precious metal in its art form of jewellery.

If you have a collection of gold jewellery or are thinking of beginning your own collection, here are 3 simple ways to evaluate and better understand gold.

1) Number of Karats

These karats are different from the measurement used for diamonds. Gold is quantified by how many out of 24 parts is made of gold - 14k, 18k or 24k, with 24k being the purest of gold. A 14k rating means it is 58% gold and 18k is 75% gold. The rest of the parts - 10k or 6k - are alloys mixed into the soft metal to give it durability and sometimes its colouration.

2) Colouration

Singaporean Low Peng Chum invented malleable purple gold back in 2005, giving Lee Hwa Jewellery something to boast about to the world. Other colours like the standard yellow gold, rose gold and white gold were made by mixing a certain ratio of silver and zinc, copper or palladium respectively to achieve their gorgeous hues. Pure gold is said to be dull, weak and easily tarnished, hence metal alloys are usually necessary for jewellery-making.

3) Types of Jewellery

The jewellery style can make prices vary. We’ll stick with the standard ring for this illustration. 24k solid gold rings are soft and without base metals for added support, it is not recommended for regular use but will be perfect for special occasions like weddings.

Gold vermeil is a sterling silver base metal interior electroplated with a thick outer layer of gold. Gold filling is about the same style, except the interior metal is a cheaper alloy and the thick outer gold layer is heat processed onto it. Lastly gold plating is just a thin layer of gold covering the exterior of an alloy.
